HP says Low Toner after fitting a cartridge with a reused chip
Understand the old chip’s reading and the printer’s Very Low setting.
2 min readSome cartridges are sold without a chip and require the original chip to be transferred. A used chip can still report its previous usage, so a new toner-filled cartridge may show Low, Very Low or Used. Check the product’s chip description first: this explanation applies to reused-chip products, not every replacement cartridge.
Decide what the warning means
- Check that the printer has accepted the cartridge and can print. Supply Memory Error, Missing Cartridge or a blocked-chip message needs recognition troubleshooting instead.
- Print a short test page. If it is clear, the low reading alone does not prove that the replacement cartridge is empty. If it is faded or incomplete, check installation and contact Ink Hero.
- If printing pauses at Very Low, consult your model’s manual for its Very Low Setting. On supported LaserJet Pro panels, Prompt lets you acknowledge the warning; Continue allows printing with the warning still displayed. Menu paths differ between button and touchscreen models.
