HP ink: “Protected Cartridge Installed”

Cartridge Protection can tie a supply to another printer. Disabling future protection does not unlock an already protected supply.

1 min read

A protected-cartridge message is different from “low ink”, “cartridge problem” or a dynamic-security rejection. On affected HP inkjets, protection restricts the supply to the printer that originally protected it.

Check the protection setting

  1. Read the exact message and save a photo. If it explicitly says the supply belongs to another printer, contact Ink Hero about the cartridge.
  2. On supported printers with the full Windows HP software, open the printer’s Estimated Ink Levels/Toolbox window.
  3. If a Cartridge Protection tab is available, choose Disable HP Cartridge Protection and save the setting before installing another new supply.
  4. If that setting is absent, use the instructions for your model rather than a factory reset.
