HP blocked chip or cartridge after a firmware update

Understand dynamic security and check the chip version for your exact printer.

In this guide

On HP printers with dynamic security, the printer checks the cartridge’s chip or circuitry. A compatible cartridge can be physically correct yet be rejected by this check, including after a firmware change.

Chip type matters

  • A product marked with chip includes a chip; that label alone does not mean every firmware version or HP+ printer will accept it.
  • HP states that cartridges retaining an original HP security chip or unmodified HP circuitry are unaffected by dynamic security. Other compatibility rules, a damaged chip or HP+ requirements can still apply.
  • A no-chip cartridge needs the chip and installation method specified on its product page. Do not move chips between unrelated cartridge families.

If a working cartridge suddenly stops being accepted

  1. Save the exact warning and printer firmware version. Note whether the problem started after an update.
  2. Contact Ink Hero with the cartridge label and order details so we can check the chip version against your exact printer. Do not downgrade firmware or change unrelated settings based on a generic internet guide.
