HP Protected Cartridge or Unauthorised Cartridge messages

Check an administrator policy or a cartridge already locked to another printer.

These HP LaserJet messages describe two different restrictions. Check the exact wording before changing any cartridge setting.

Protected and unauthorised are different

  • Protected Cartridge (for example 10.57.0X): the cartridge was permanently tied to another printer or fleet. Switching protection off on this printer will not unlock an already protected cartridge. It needs a suitable replacement.
  • Unauthorised Cartridge (for example 10.30.0X): an administrator may have enabled Cartridge Policy to allow only approved HP supplies. Ask the printer administrator to check that policy against the model’s manual.

Avoid locking the next cartridge

  1. Before fitting a new cartridge that must be usable in other printers, ask the administrator to check Cartridge Protection. Where the model supports it, set protection to Off before installing the new cartridge.
  2. Use the exact control-panel or Embedded Web Server instructions for your model; administrator access may be required. Turning protection off affects future cartridges, not ones already locked.
