HP Supply Memory Error or Install Cartridge after replacement

Check the packaging, seating and chip connection before changing settings.

2 min read

A Supply Memory Error means the printer cannot read or communicate with a cartridge’s chip. It is different from a low-toner estimate: putting more toner in the cartridge or resetting a drum counter will not repair that connection.

Check the indicated cartridge

  1. Write down the full error code and the affected colour, then switch the printer off and unplug it before inspecting inside. Allow hot parts to cool.
  2. Remove that cartridge by its handle. Check for shipping clips, seals or protective strips that its installation leaflet tells you to remove. Keep fingers off rollers and drum surfaces.
  3. Inspect the cartridge’s chip/contact for dirt, missing parts or damage. Gently wipe its exposed contact with a dry lint-free cloth; do not scrape it or bend contacts inside the printer.
  4. Fit the cartridge fully, close the access cover, reconnect power and try again. If available, compare with the cartridge that was working before.
