Ink cartridge help

Why does a new cartridge show low or unknown ink?

A level estimate is different from a cartridge-recognition error.

1 min read

Many printers estimate supply levels from usage information. HP notes that these estimates can be less accurate with remanufactured, refilled or previously used cartridges. A low or unknown display alone does not prove that the replacement contains no ink.

Decide what the printer is actually reporting

  • It prints normally: keep an eye on output and have a spare ready. Follow the printer’s own instructions for a low-level warning.
  • It will not recognise the cartridge: use the cartridge-error guide and keep the exact message.
  • Output is faint or missing: print the built-in quality check and use the print-quality guide.
  • It says replacement is required: follow the model-specific message rather than forcing printing with an empty supply.
