Toner rubs off Brother prints: check paper and fixing
Match the paper setting and use the MFC-L2700DW fixing controls before considering a printer fault.
2 min readIf toner smudges or rubs away after the page has cooled, check how the printer is fixing toner to the paper. This is different from a cleanly printed line or spot that repeats in the same place.
Check paper and fixing settings
- Try fresh, supported plain paper and select the matching Media Type in the print driver. Do not leave it set to plain paper when printing an envelope or thicker stock.
- On Brother MFC-L2700DW, choose Improve Toner Fixing in the Brother driver if that option is available.
- If it still smears, follow Brother’s poor-fixing guide for its thicker media setting, or Env. Thick for an envelope. Stay within the printer’s supported paper specifications.
- If you previously lowered the two rear green pressure levers for envelopes on this model, let the printer cool and follow Brother’s diagram to return both levers fully up for ordinary printing.
- Print a fresh sample and compare. If correctly set plain paper still has loose toner, stop changing settings and ask for help.
The named driver options and rear levers are model-specific. For another printer, check its paper and fixing instructions rather than moving an unidentified lever.
