Epson XP-420: nozzle check and head cleaning
Check the pattern first; clean only if it has gaps, then compare a second pattern.

- Load plain paper. From Home, select Setup → Maintenance → Nozzle Check, pressing OK for each choice.
- Use the screen prompt to print the pattern. Complete lines mean no cleaning is needed.
- If there are gaps, choose Head Cleaning → OK and follow the screen to start it.
- Leave the power on and the scanner closed until cleaning finishes. Select Nozzle Check afterwards and compare the new sheet.
A complete pattern with crooked or doubled lines suggests alignment instead. A paper-type or quality-setting problem will not necessarily improve with cleaning.
